Intro to Stage Combat:
In this residency we offer a brief overview of the foundational techniques of unarmed stage combat. Students will learn stage combat safety and the techniques for creating the illusion of violence along with the building blocks for effective stage falls, slaps, punches, and grabs.
Typical length for this residency will be one or two standard classes (60-75 minutes). More material can be covered and students can be expected to have a deeper understanding with longer residencies.
Crash Course Stage Combat:
In this residency we take a more in depth look at one of the classic stage combat weapons systems. Disciplines offered are unarmed, single sword, broadsword, or quarterstaff. Students will gain a deeper understanding of stage combat safety and the techniques for creating the illusion of violence. Discipline appropriate attacks, defenses and some cool tricks will give students confidence to perform a choreographed fight at the completion of the residency.
Typical length for this residency is a minimum of one week (5 classes) of standard length classes (60-75 minutes). More material can be covered and students can be expected to have a deeper understanding with longer residencies.
In Depth Intensives:
In this residency we will explore one or more weapon systems in great detail. Students will discover many of the ins and outs of a weapons usage and get an understanding of its historical context both within a martial and theatrical context. Culminating in the performance of a fight scene with dialogue and character this is the premiere school residency offering students an unparalleled introduction into the world of stage combat.
Recommended instructional time is a minimum of 12 hours per selected weapon system. Available weapons at an introductory level are, unarmed, single sword, and quarterstaff. Experienced student groups may be offered, rapier & dagger, longsword, smallsword, unarmed martial arts/knife.

As a Certified Instructor with The Academy of Fight Directors Canada John Knight is able to provide training in any of the AFDC levels. Basic Actor Combatant training can be arranged with John as well as fulfillment of conditional hours.
